Snowfall amounts are not heavy, but please act accordingly while checking the condition of fresh snow up to this morning. Be alert for "terrain traps" where even small avalanches can have serious consequences. Warm southwesterly winds are expected to move in and temperatures are forecast to rise, so please pay close attention to weather changes during the day. At higher elevations, elevated temperatures and winds could cause quick slabs to form and unstable areas to emerge. At lower elevations, there is a risk of glide avalanche. Do not enter slopes with glide cracks and move quickly when passing under them.
Evaluate only elevations where snowfall is occurring.
On a very steep slope, unaffected by wind.
Beware of slopes with glide cracks in lower elevation areas where rain is falling.
Yesterday (20th), a glide avalanche was observed at a very low elevation.
The previous stormy snow has settled and the weak snowfall since yesterday afternoon is on top of the old snow. Snowfall so far this morning has been about 15 cm upper part of Below Treeline. Currently, there is light precipitation at lower elevations and snowfall at higher elevations, and warm southwest winds are coming in. However, the wind is not strong yet, with a maximum of about 15 m/s on the main ridge.
Today, a low pressure system with a front is expected to move east-northeastward along the southern coast of Honshu. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting a slightly southerly wind, then northerly wind, rain or snow, cloudy from early afternoon, and a daytime high temperature of 8 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. The temperature at Hakuba (elevation 703 m) is 1.6 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
