At higher elevations, the snow surface is expected to be frozen, with a thin layer of new snowfall on top of it. Be careful of slips and falls. Be aware of glide avalanches at lower elevations where the snowpack is thin. Be sure to pass quickly through open glide cracks and the lower portions of cliff-like slopes. There are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase damage even if the size of the avalanche that occurs is small. Be careful of falling into gully.
Do not enter open glide cracks or under cliff-like steep slopes.
Yesterday (21st), there were reports of numerous small loose snow avalanches on steep slopes in all directions due to rainfall.
Old snow is settling and bonding is good. New snowfall up to yesterday is expected to be wet above 2000m due to rainfall and then frozen to form crusts. At lower elevations, the snowpack is expected to lose its wetting strength.
As of 4:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara was 1.7°C. There was 8.5 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting that the low pressure system will move east of Japan but will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air, resulting in cloudy and sometimes sunny skies until early afternoon, with some rain or snow at night in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture.
