Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations, the instability of the storm slab from yesterday's snowfall remains in terrain localities. Avoid areas with extreme geometry that do not support snow accumulation. On the other hand, at lower elevations, the effects of yesterday's rainfall were very significant and the snow has melted. There are many hazards other than avalanches, such as weakened snow bridges and holes in stream bottoms, so please plan your tours with these factors in mind. A major snowstorm is forecast for tomorrow and beyond. Today may be a precious sunny day. Have a safe and enjoyable day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (21st), several size 1 loose snow avalanches or size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were observed at elevations above 2,000 m. At lower elevations, size 1 point avalanches or size 1 loose snow avalanches due to wet snow and size 1 glide avalanches were observed.

Snowpack

Approximately 25 mm of precipitation was observed in the 24-hour period from the afternoon of the 20th to noon on the 21st. This resulted in avalanches of wet snow at lower elevations. On the other hand, at higher elevations, avalanches were occurring due to the fresh snow. This condition is now stabilizing due to the lower nighttime temperatures. However, at very low elevations, the cold temperatures are still weak and high temperatures are predicted for today as well as the previous day, so be very careful on slopes with glide cracks.

Weather

Today, the area will be moderately covered by high pressure, but is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy and occasionally sunny skies, and a daytime high of 9 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is 0.7 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.) with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
