Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations, the instability of the storm slab from yesterday's snowfall remains in terrain localities. Avoid areas with extreme geometry that will not support snow accumulation. On the other hand, at lower elevations, yesterday's rainfall has had a significant impact on the snowmelt. There are many non-avalanche hazards such as weakened snow bridges and holes in stream bottoms, so please take these into account when planning your tour.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (21st), a glide avalanche of size 1.5-2 was observed below 1,000 m elevation. Although no information is available at higher elevations, storm slab avalanches have been reported in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains in the alpine.

Snowpack

About 15 mm of precipitation was observed in the 24-hour period from the afternoon of the 20th to noon on the 21st. This resulted in glide avalanches at lower elevations. The cold temperatures this morning were weak. And with the same high temperatures predicted for today as the previous day, caution should be exercised on slopes with glide cracks.

Weather

Today, the area is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, cloudy nights, rain, and daytime highs of 9 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
