Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations, the snow surface is frozen, with a thin layer of new snowfall on top of it. Be careful of slips and falls. At lower elevations, where the snowpack is thin, beware of glide avalanches. Be sure to pass quickly through open glide cracks and the lower portions of cliff-like slopes. There are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase damage even if the size of the avalanche that occurs is small. Be careful of falling into gully. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a wintry pattern in the coming days. Changes in snowfall and winds will increase avalanche danger. Please pay attention to the changing weather conditions.

概要

Avalanche

No reports of avalanches observed yesterday (22nd).

Snowpack

Old snow was wet above 2000m due to rainfall and then froze to form crusts. At higher elevations, 5-10 cm of snow is expected to fall on top of it. At lower elevations, the snowpack is losing its wetting strength due to the cold nighttime temperatures.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara was 1.8°C. There was 1.5 mm of rainfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear skies, cloudy skies and snow at night in northern Gunma Prefecture due to a gradually developing winter pressure pattern, a pressure trough and cold air.
