Travel and Terrain Advice

Although the overall avalanche danger level is low at this time, the weather conditions continue to worsen as fierce winds have already begun to blow on the main ridge. Be on the lookout for slabs that will form as the snowfall begins. Also, be very careful of slides on hard snow and holes in stream bottoms, in addition to avalanches. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy the nicely pressurized runs in the ski area.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (22nd), several size 1-2 glide avalanches were observed at very low elevations. No information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

In areas lower in elevation than around 2,100 m, Melt-Freeze crusts 1-3 cm thick are forming on the snow surface. In addition, at elevations higher than around 2,100 m, low-density snow is hiding under wind slabs, a situation that is responsive to human stimulation, as observed yesterday in the adjacent Hakuba area.

Weather

Today, the area is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and strong cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting slightly strong westerly winds, snow, and daytime high temperatures of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 1 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
