Alpine Low Watch for wind slabs in terrain pockets.
Treeline Low
Below Treeline Fair Note the isolated and extreme terrain.
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
The snow itself from the heavy snowfall is stabilizing, but the strong winds that followed have moved the snow violently, creating hard slabs on the snowpack surface. Look for simple slopes where the wind is less of an influence and the terrain can easily support the snowpack. Don't forget to check for "terrain traps" below you. The mountain is expected to be crowded. Pay attention to the movements of other groups above and below you. Smart group management using the terrain will minimize accidents. The low temperatures have cooled the snow well. If you choose the right slopes you will enjoy great powder snow. Have a good day.
At higher elevations, the formation of wind slabs, which have become stiffer over time, is suspected. Estimating the triggered sensitivity of hard slabs is difficult, and fracture lines often appear above you. Risk reduction is necessary using terrain.
Note the isolated and extreme terrain geometry with no solar and wind effects
Yesterday (26th), a size 1.5 slab avalanche was observed on the southwest side of the Myoko mountain area.
The series of snowfalls that began on the evening of the 23rd stopped yesterday evening (25th). Yesterday (26th), about 10 cm of snow fell. Stormy snow is observed to be settling steadily below treeline. However, strong winds blowing from the west to the northwest have caused the snow to move violently and slabs are forming.
Today, the winter pressure pattern will gradually loosen, but is expected to be affected by cold air and a pressure trough. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, snow or rain, occasionally cloudy, and daytime high temperatures of 5 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
