At very high elevations, watch out for wind slabs forming on isolated areas of extreme terrain. On the main ridge, southwest winds have been increasing since early today. Meanwhile, at lower elevations, watch out for wet loose snow avalanches as temperatures are forecast to rise above yesterday's levels. Whether you are a climber or a skier, be on the lookout for start zones above you. Remember that lower elevation areas are exposed to different hazards than in the normal season, such as snow bridge breaking in gully. The weather is slowly descending. Have a good day.
Beware of isolated extreme terrain pockets.
Be aware of rising temperatures during the day and the effects of solar radiation
Yesterday (30th), several size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed on steep, south-facing slopes at lower elevations.
Hard Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed on the ridge tops and in areas exposed to the wind. In addition, due to several days of favorable weather, crusts have formed due to solar radiation and elevated temperatures over a wide area at lower elevations. The northern slopes are still dry, but surface hoar growth has been observed and may be a concern in future snowfalls.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later northerly winds, sunny, sometimes cloudy, with a daytime high of 10 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -8.2 °C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
