Pay attention to the effects of rainfall and elevated temperatures at lower elevations and the amount of snow that falls during the day at higher elevations. There are many areas where the snowfall is at least as heavy as it is hard, with hard crusts hidden underneath, so be alert for avalanches as well as slips and falls. There are also many steep slopes with glide cracks, so pay attention to those as well. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to notice hazards above you. Even if the avalanche hazard level is not so high, keep safe by maintaining good communication with your companions.
Strong northwest to west winds are already blowing above.
Watch for more rainfall and rising temperatures.
No new avalanches were observed yesterday (31st).
There was a light snowfall at higher elevations beginning around noon yesterday. Freezing levels have changed over time and the amount of snowfall at higher elevations is unknown. These new snowfalls are on hard Melt-Freeze crusts on the southern slopes and around the ridge at higher elevations and on dry snow on the northern terrain. At the lower elevations, the lower slopes have been more affected by rainfall and elevated temperatures.
A cold front is expected to pass through the area today, bringing cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, slightly stronger during the day, snow or rain, and daytime high temperatures of 8 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.).
