This is a day with a mix of slopes that are stiff and hard due to the cooler temperatures and slabs that have formed from some snowfall yesterday and are not yet stable enough. When making ski cuts, be sure to assess the terrain carefully. There have been accidents in the past where people have gotten caught on hard surfaces below the slab and slipped. Consider whether there are any "terrain traps" below the slope where even a small avalanche could have serious consequences.
Below treeline only at the top. Pay attention to the bonding of new snow and old snow.
No avalanches were reported yesterday (1st).
Yesterday's snowfall was more in the northern areas, about 10-15 cm. In some elevation zones, there is fresh snow on top of rain-soaked snow. Also, yesterday morning temperatures were higher, but have since dropped significantly.
Cold air is expected to affect the area today. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly and later northwesterly winds and daytime high temperatures of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 2 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 3 cm in the past 24 hours.
