Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for areas where soft storm slabs are forming while under the influence of the wind. Even if the avalanche is not large, a "terrain trap" below the slope can have deadly consequences. Remember that hard slopes may be hidden under fresh snow that looks pleasant. Since the snow is often cold, you should be able to enjoy pleasant powder snow even at reduced angles of slopes if the wind is not affecting the terrain. Look for simple terrain. In addition, snowpack remains thin at lower elevations. Be on the lookout for hazardous elements other than avalanches (holes in stream bottoms, etc.).

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (2nd), size 1 dry loose snow avalanches were observed on the east and south steep slopes at higher elevations. Both occurrences were caused by ski cuts.

Snowpack

Due to the cold air that has been entering the area since the day before yesterday, very light snowfall is continuing at higher elevations. This, combined with westerly winds (averaging 10 m/s on the main ridge), is depositing the light snow locally and creating slabs. Underneath this new snow hides a very hard old snow surface, so pay attention to the bonding of the boundary surfaces.

Weather

Today, the area will be covered by high pressure, but is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy and sometimes sunny skies, snow until midday, and a daytime high of 4 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -5.7 °C (as of 5:00).
