Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for areas where soft storm slabs are forming while under the influence of the wind. Even if the avalanche is not large, a "terrain trap" below the slope can have deadly consequences. Remember that hard slopes may be hidden under fresh snow that looks pleasant. Since the snow is often cold, you should be able to enjoy pleasant new snow even at reduced angles of slopes if the wind is not affecting the terrain. Look for simple terrain. In addition, snowpack remains low at lower elevations. Be on the lookout for hazardous elements other than avalanches (holes in stream bottoms, etc.).

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (2nd).

Snowpack

Due to the incoming cold air, very light snowfall continues at higher elevations. This, combined with westerly winds, is depositing that light snow locally and creating slabs. Underneath this new snow hides a hard old snow surface, so pay attention to the bonding of the boundary surfaces.

Weather

The area is expected to be affected by cold and moist air today. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, later westerly winds, snow, cloudy before noon, and daytime high temperatures of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.) and 2 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
