Travel and Terrain Advice

Currently, there is some very light snowfall at lower elevations, but not enough weather is forecast to significantly alter conditions. As with the previous day, this is a safe day for dry snow as long as you look for simple terrain with little wind influence. Watch out for unstable slabs on extremely shaped terrain. Also be on the lookout for "terrain traps" below them. Snowpack remains low at lower elevations. Pay attention to hazardous elements other than avalanches (e.g., holes in stream bottoms). Although this is a low avalanche danger day, please continue to take safety actions such as stopping in safe areas and spacing yourself appropriately. Good behavioral habits will reduce damage in the event of an emergency.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (3rd).

Snowpack

A hard Melt-Freeze layer is exposed on the ridges where the wind hits, and dry snow is accumulating in areas not affected by the wind. Since yesterday, wind conditions have remained light on the main ridge as well, leaving old wind slabs in terrain pockets.

Weather

Today, the area will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air, but is expected to be gradually covered by high pressure. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy and sunny from midday to early afternoon, with a daytime high of 4 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation, the temperature is -2.7 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. Yesterday, the alpine area was clear, but clouds were building up around 1,500-2,000 m elevation, creating a sea of clouds over the Hakuba Valley.
