Travel and Terrain Advice

Watch for storm slabs formed by yesterday's snowfall. Also, if winds begin to blow in the future, watch out for the snow and direction it moves in. Consider that if moderate winds blow for a few hours, the danger level on the downwind side of the slope will increase significantly. Even in the forest, avalanche conditions are possible due to loose snow. Pay attention to stream geometry and slopes in the forest. Although a good amount of snow has fallen, the hight of snow at lower elevations is not sufficient. Imagine that this new snow hides holes in the stream bottom, glide cracks, and many other hazards. Inexperienced groups will probably have a good day with fresh snow in the ski area. If you do, we ask that you please observe the skiing areas.

Avalanche Problem

Consider the formation of very soft slabs. The higher the elevation, the more vigilant you should be about the bonding condition of the interface between new and old snow. The most effective strategy is to look for slopes that are less sloping.

Even in the forest, if the slope is very steep, assume that a loose snow avalanche is possible. Snow is heavy and even small avalanches can be fatal.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (5th), a size 1 avalanche occurred in the ski cut during daytime management at the ski area. This was due to snow that began falling on the same day.

Snowpack

With the passage of the low-pressure system, about 30 cm of snow fell at the foot of the mountain from midday to night yesterday. This snow is on top of hard snow surfaces such as Melt-Freeze crusts and wind slabs. Snowfall stopped late last night and is slowly beginning to settle. Winds on the main ridge have been light since yesterday at around 5 m/s. The wind direction was southwest at the time of snowfall and is now northwest.

Weather

Today, a high pressure pattern in the west and a low pressure pattern in the east is expected, and the area will be affected by a pressure trough and cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, and snow in places, with a daytime high of 3 °C (37 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -2.0 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
