Wind conditions remain relatively light on the main ridges, but in the mountains, winds are converging due to terrain action and wind speeds are increasing locally in some areas. Today, please pay special attention to slopes where the snow in such areas is moving and forming wind slabs. Also, when visibility is poor, situational awareness will be poor. Please maintain communication with your companions and judge conditions. The effect of solar radiation is minimal and snow sintering is progressing slowly. On very steep slopes, consider the danger of storm slab to be ongoing. Please use safe terrain wisely and use principled group management.
Wind speeds on the main ridge remain relatively light at 10 m/s, but are strong enough to move dry snow and form slabs.
Yesterday (6th), a soft storm slab avalanche and a loose snow avalanche on a soft storm slab and a loose snow avalanche were observed during morning safety control at the ski area. Size was 1-1.5. Size 1 loose snow avalanches of size 1 were also observed in the mountain area.
With the passage of the low pressure system, there is 30-40 cm of new snow near the treeline, forming a soft slab. Information on the bonding strength of the interface between the new snow and the old snow is limited, and should be carefully monitored.
Today, the area will be moderately covered by high pressure over the continent, but is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy skies, snow in places, and a daytime high of 4 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -3.3 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
