Beware of induced wind slabs on extreme steep slopes on high elevation ridges and just below branch ridges. Avalanches caused by storm slabs on extremely steep slopes have also been reported. Be careful of triggering in areas where there are sudden changes in slope level or in open areas with few trees. Be aware of group management to ensure that other skiers are not on the slope above or below you. Even if the size of the avalanche that occurs is small, "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage are exposed. Care should also be taken to avoid falling into gully. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are in the forecast. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large, steep south-facing slopes.
Beware of extremely steep slopes just below the ridge and branch ridges.
Beware of extremely steep slopes
Yesterday (8th), there were reports of multiple human-triggered slab avalanches size 1.5-2 on extreme steep slopes in the Tanigawadake area from southeast to south, as well as a small wind-slab avalanche observed on extreme steep slopes just below the ridge.
About 20-30 cm of past snowfall has been settling on top of the hard, compacted snowpack, but there is a low-density layer at the boundary, and human-triggered avalanches have been occurring from this layer. Caution should be exercised at higher elevations where bonding is difficult. There are crusts in the middle part of the snowpack, and bonding is rising in the higher elevations, although the surrounding area is faceting. Vulnerability of the lower part of the snowpack has not been reported.
As of 5:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is -2.6℃. Around the area, there was 1-2cm of snowfall last night. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear and sometimes cloudy skies at the foot of the mountain due to the influence of a pressure trough and moist air, although high pressure is expected to prevail.
