Instability in the mountain snowpack is slowly dissipating. Watch for unstable snow remaining in terrain pockets. Consider whether there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope where even a small avalanche can have deadly consequences. Even if you feel that snow conditions are good, remember to manage your group using safe terrain. Have a good day.
Watch for slabs forming in terrain pockets as the snow moves where the winds converge. Wind direction is shifting to the south, so consider that as well.
Beware of extreme terrain features, such as very steep
Note the effects of solar radiation and elevated temperatures during the day.
Yesterday (8th), several size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were reported on steep south-facing slopes at lower elevations. Numerous snowballs were also observed. A size 1 storm slab avalanche by ski cut was reported.
The low-pressure snow on the 5th is old snow, and some snowfall associated with the cold air inflow is on it. This low-pressure snow has not fully stabilized, so the layer is responding to human stimulation with increasing slab tendencies, plus terrain pockets such as very steep slopes. In addition, wet loose snow avalanches are occurring at lower elevations on the southern slopes, where the influence of solar radiation is stronger.
High pressure is expected to prevail today, but cold air is expected to influence the area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, daytime, northerly winds, cloudy, nighttime, clear, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
