It is a good day to head to the alpine area because of the weather and good snow conditions. Two points to note. Watch out for slabs on slopes with isolated terrains where the terrain does not support snowpack. The second is to look for newly formed wind slabs, based on the wind tracks left on the snow surface this morning and the current wind conditions, and avoid the slope if you see such a formation. If the wind and sunny slopes do not affect slopes, you will be able to enjoy dry powder skiing. Remember to control your speed. A fall in a backcountry can lead to many things, including loss of action due to equipment damage. Continue to manage your group wisely using safe terrain. Keep in mind that later in the tour, at lower elevations, the danger of wet snow from solar radiation may increase in the afternoon. It's the start of a three-day weekend, have a great day.
Winds are increasing overhead. Be alert for wind slabs forming in terrain pockets.
Slabs on extremely shaped terrain
If rainfall begins, pay special attention to slopes that already have glide cracks.
Yesterday (9th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche of size 1 dry avalanche was observed at higher elevations. This avalanche was caused by a ski cut. Several size 1-1.5 glide avalanches were also reported at lower elevations.
The snow from the low pressure system on the 5th is further settling. And the snow from the subsequent weak snowfall on top of it. This new snow layer is not accompanied by strong winter winds, so it remains soft at higher elevations. In addition, crusts are forming on the snow surface on slopes that are strongly influenced by solar radiation. At lower elevations, where the effects of elevation rise in addition to solar radiation are stronger, a glide avalanche occurred yesterday in a terrain pocket.
Today, high pressure is expected to prevail, but cold air is expected to influence the area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly and westerly winds, with clear skies, rain or snow in the afternoon, and daytime high temperatures of 8 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
