This is a change from yesterday's understandable and safe conditions, and the snowpack in the mountains has become difficult to find. In the bigger picture, be aware of the bonding conditions of new and old snow since yesterday afternoon. Be especially wary of areas where the surface snow has slab characteristics due to the wind. The next more hazardous areas are on the northern slopes, where there is no influence of solar radiation and wind. Surface hoar is likely to be buried under the new snow, which is sensitive to human stimulation and can trigger avalanches. It is important to choose slopes with gentle slopes, no large steep slopes above you, and no "terrain traps" below you. The weather is forecast to improve in the afternoon, but please exercise caution.
In areas where there has been heavy snowfall, pay close attention to the bonding of new snow and old snow since yesterday afternoon. New snow is accumulating at higher elevations under the influence of northwest to west winds (up to about 15 m/s). In areas where the influence of solar radiation and winds is weaker and slopes are less utilized, surface hoar is more likely to be hidden under the new snow, so more careful assesment is required.
A size 1 loose snow avalanche of size 1 dry snow avalanche was reported yesterday (10th). This avalanche was caused by a ski cut.
A light winter snowfall began yesterday afternoon and continued until early today. Snowfall amounts were heavy in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, ranging from 20-25 cm in the upper treeline. As of yesterday, surface hoar of up to 10 mm was observed at elevations above the treeline. This surface hoar is hiding under fresh snow, and in areas where the fresh snow has the characteristics of a slab due to the wind, it can easily trigger an avalanche. Areas where the surface hoar is buried are isolated and difficult to detect, so careful action is required.
Today, high pressure over the continent will extend south of Japan, but is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, clearing from midday, and daytime highs of 5 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -2.1 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
