Travel and Terrain Advice

As on the previous day, watch for slabs forming in terrain pockets at higher elevations and avalanches from wet snow at lower elevations. Temperatures will rise significantly, as they did the day before, even if there is not as much sunshine as the day before. Watch out for snow changes during the day. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. When planning tours, take into account that the snow has melted at lower elevations.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (14th), numerous loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed below treeline. In the alpine area, a size 2-2.5 slab avalanche, estimated to have occurred within the past 24 hours, was observed on the east slope.

Snowpack

Until yesterday, winter was present on the same day in the north at higher elevations and spring at lower elevations. In the alpine areas, strong southwesterly winds exposed wind slabs and hard old snow surfaces in some areas, and sluff was also occurring in areas where the wind was weak. At lower elevations, on the other hand, wet loose snow avalanches occurred and glide cracks expanded. Today, the trend was generally the same as the previous day. Even without solar radiation, temperatures will rise as they did yesterday, and with precipitation in the forecast, we need to consider the effects of this.

Weather

Today, a low pressure system is expected to move from the Sea of Japan to the Sanriku Coast, and a cold front extending from the low pressure system is expected to move southward from the Sea of Japan to Honshu. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, late evening showers, and daytime highs of 17 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -1.6 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. Nagano District Meteorological Observatory forecasted 30 mm of precipitation for northern Nagano Prefecture at 4:50 a.m. on March 15 in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on March 16.
