Watch out for instability caused by the new snow that has fallen so far this morning. The snowfall has been predominantly in the northern areas and has not been heavy, but there are hard, frozen slopes beneath the new snow. Even small avalanche triggers can lead to slip down. If there are elements of a "terrain trap" below the slope, such as cliffs, trees, or rocks, the consequences can be serious. Continue to follow basic safety behaviors such as stopping at safe areas and spacing member out in hazardous areas.
Check the bonding of the old snow with the new snow that has fallen so far this morning.
Numerous size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed yesterday (15th). Several glide avalanches were also reported.
The snow surface is wet from the rainfall yesterday (15th) and frozen hard in the higher elevations due to the cold nighttime temperatures. Late last night, a winter pressure system formed, and by this morning, about 18 mm of precipitation had fallen mainly in the northern areas of the Hakuba Valley. There is not a lot of new snow below treeline, but at higher elevations there is about 20 cm of snow, which is being affected by the strong northwest winds. Please check the bonding condition of the boundary between new snow and old snow carefully.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sunny from midday, snowy in places until early afternoon, and a daytime high of 4 °C (39 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -1.1 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
