Travel and Terrain Advice

It is a day when the risk of avalanche remains relatively high only in specific terrain. If you look for a simple slope that is not affected by the wind, you can enjoy a comfortable slide. On the other hand, be wary of slabs that form in areas where the terrain is difficult to support snow, such as isolated terrain. If there is a "terrain trap" below the slope, even a small avalanche can have a fatal outcome. Due to the rainfall until yesterday, snow melting progressed in low-lying areas. Please prepare your tour plans assuming that your usual route may be difficult to navigate. Crowds are expected on the mountain. Please use wise group management, such as using safe terrain and thinking about those above and below you. have a nice day.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

Strong winds subsided at noon yesterday (16th) and are now at a maximum of 5 m/s or less on the main ridge. Remember that the old windslab, which has become harder and less triggering with the passage of time, will also change easier to trigger as the hardness decreases under the influence of the strong solar radiation during the day.

Watch out for unstable snow that remains on very steep slopes without the influence of the wind.

Be careful of snow changes during the day on steep slopes that are strongly affected by rising temperatures and solar radiation.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 storm slab avalanche was observed yesterday (16th). Also, as of this morning, a size 2.5 glide avalanche that occurred during the night was reported as observed.

Snowpack

The storm snow, which amounted to about 20 cm yesterday in the upper part of the below treeline, has formed hard wind slabs in areas affected by the wind and soft accumulations in areas not affected by the wind. Underneath the new snow is a variety of hard old snow, crusts, etc. Please check the condition of its boundary surface carefully.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, later northerly wind, clear skies, and a daytime high of 11 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -5.3 °C (as of 5:00), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
