Alpine Fair Note the effects of solar radiation and temperature rise
Treeline Fair Note the effects of solar radiation and elevated temperatures.
Below Treeline Good Watch for rising temperatures and solar radiation effects.
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
The overall trend is the same as yesterday. A large temperature increase is predicted, so be on the lookout for loose snow avalanches caused by wet snow due to solar radiation and high temperatures. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily scoop even small avalanches underfoot. If there are "terrain traps" such as cliffs or trees below where you fall and slide, the consequences can be serious. Avalanches caused by wet snow with weakened bonding can also occur in the forests if the slope is steep enough. Do not let your guard down and pay attention to the slope above you, even when walking on forest trails. Take sunscreen and plenty of water with you. Have a good day.
Elevated temperatures and solar radiation during the day increase the risk.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Note instability of old slabs remaining in terrain pockets
Yesterday (17th), many size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanches were observed on steep south-facing slopes due to elevated temperatures and solar radiation. Size 1.5 glide avalanches were also reported. On the other hand, a size 1 wind slab avalanche triggered by a skier was reported on the eastern slope of the Treeline.
Below treeline conditions are spring conditions. The snow is frozen hard in the morning and becomes wet during the day due to rising temperatures and solar radiation. Glide cracks are expanding, and numerous wet loose snow avalanches were observed yesterday. At elevations above the Treeline, spring and winter are mixed. Where the effects of sunny slopes and rising temperatures are present, crusts are forming and making skiing difficult, while good dry snow remains on some of the northern slopes. The instability of the dry snow has generally dissipated, and the conditions are good if one is wary of the unstable snow remaining in terrain pockets.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, cloudy evenings, and daytime highs of 16 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -0.2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
