Travel and Terrain Advice

The overall trend is the same as yesterday. However, a larger temperature increase is forecast for today, so be on the lookout for loose snow avalanches of wet snow due to solar radiation and high temperatures. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily scoop even small avalanches underfoot. If there are "terrain traps" such as cliffs or trees below where you fall and slide, the consequences can be serious. Avalanches caused by wet snow with weakened bonding can also occur in the forests if the slope is steep enough. Do not let your guard down and pay attention to the slope above you, even when walking on forest trails. Take sunscreen and plenty of water with you. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (17th), multiple size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed due to elevated temperatures and solar radiation. Size 2 glide avalanches and size 1 wet slab avalanches were also reported. No dry snow avalanches have been reported.

Snowpack

Below treeline conditions are spring conditions. Snow is frozen in the morning and becomes wet during the day due to rising temperatures and solar radiation. Glide cracks are expanding, and loose snow avalanches caused by wet snow were observed yesterday. At elevations above the Treeline, spring and winter are mixed. Where the effects of sunny slopes and rising temperatures are present, crusts are forming, making skiing difficult, and good dry snow remains on some of the northern slopes. The instability of the dry snow has generally dissipated, and the conditions are good if one is wary of the unstable snow remaining in terrain pockets.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime and northerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime maximum temperature of 18 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
