High temperatures continue. Be on the lookout for glide avalanches and loose snow avalanches, even if there is no solar radiation. Do not rest with your back to the slope in the backcountry or on forest trails in ski areas. Pay attention for glide cracks or unstable snow blocks and move away from below them immediately. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. Do not underestimate it just because it is a small avalanche.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Avalanches caused by wet, bonding-weakened snow can also occur in the forest if the slope is steep enough.
Yesterday (18th), several wet loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed.
At lower elevations than the Treeline, conditions are perfectly spring-like. Temperatures rose to 14°C yesterday at the base of the mountain and remained positive through this morning. This has allowed the snow to melt and the glide cracks to expand. Even without solar radiation today, temperatures are forecast to rise similarly to the previous day, so be on the lookout for glide avalanches, especially at lower elevations.
Today, a front is expected to move southward across the Sea of Japan and be affected by moist air. As a result, it is forecast to be generally cloudy in northern Nagano Prefecture, with showers in some areas before noon and widespread rain in the evening. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, late and slightly stronger, cloudy skies, nighttime showers, and daytime highs of 17 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is 2.5 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. Nagano District Meteorological Office is forecasting 30 mm of precipitation in the 24-hour period from 4:35 a.m. on the 19th until 6:00 a.m. on the 20th.
