Travel and Terrain Advice

High temperatures continue. Be on the lookout for glide avalanches and loose snow avalanches, even if there is no solar radiation. Do not rest with your back to the slope in the backcountry or on forest trails in ski areas. Pay attention for glide cracks or unstable snow blocks and move away from below them immediately. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. Do not underestimate it just because it is a small avalanche.

Avalanches caused by wet, bonding-weakened snow can also occur in the forest if the slope is steep enough.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (18th), a number of size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanches were observed. There were also reports of size 1-2 glide avalanches.

Snowpack

Below the Treeline elevation, conditions are completely spring-like. Yesterday, temperatures were positive even above 2,000 m elevation. At the foot of the mountain, temperatures have been very high, and at the AMeDAS Sekiyama (350 m elevation), temperatures have been above 10°C since last night. This has resulted in snowmelt and expanding glide cracks. Today, temperatures are forecast to rise similarly to the previous day, so please be on the lookout for glide avalanches, especially at lower elevations.

Weather

Today, high pressure is expected to prevail at first, but a frontal system extending from a low-pressure system moving from the Maritime Provinces to the Sea of Okhotsk is expected to move southward across the Sea of Japan. As a result, it is forecast to be sunny, cloudy or cloudy, and gradually rainy in the evening. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, late afternoon and early evening showers, and daytime highs of 21 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
