As on the previous day, large open slopes that are already glide-cracked (e.g., the south face of Toomi One and Happo One) are in a state of high probability for a large scale glide avalanche to occur. Sufficiently wet snow is not cohesive, so avalanches can occur even in the forest if the slope is sufficiently steep. Consider carefully what terrain you are in and what features the slope above you has. Remember that slopes with glide cracks will not stabilize immediately after this, even if the rain stops and the temperature begins to drop.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Snowpack strength does not recover quickly after rainfall stops.
Positive temperatures up to the main ridge with strong southwest (averaging over 10 m/s) winds and blowing rain.
A size 2 glide avalanche was reported yesterday (20th). Due to poor weather conditions, information is extremely limited.
High temperatures continue and the snowpack is in spring conditions. Currently, it is raining at the base of the mountain, but temperatures are also positive on the main ridge, and the snow is wet at all elevations. A gradual drop in temperatures is in the forecast, which may change to snow at higher elevations. Even if the snow surface begins to freeze, it will not recover its strength quickly inside the snowpack (especially where glide cracks are in place), so caution should be exercised.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, rain, and occasional showers until late afternoon, with cloudy skies and a daytime high of 7 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is 1.0 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and has remained positive since yesterday until this morning. The Nagano District Meteorological Office is forecasting 20 mm of precipitation in the 24-hour period from 4:36 a.m. on the 21st until 6:00 a.m. on the 22nd.
