Travel and Terrain Advice

Weather conditions are forecast to worsen. Avalanche danger is not high at this time, but will increase with wind and snow intensity. Avalanche danger should be considered sufficiently high on steep downwind slopes when snowfall intensity of 3 cm per hour with moderate winds (dry snow moving across the snow surface) continues for 3-4 hours. When visibility is poor, "situational awareness," the ability to recognize in advance the dangers that exist in one's surroundings, is reduced. Please manage your group wisely by maintaining good communication with your fellow skiers and using safe terrain. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to have fun on the ski slopes.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (25th), many size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed at very low elevations. Size 2 glide avalanches were also reported.

Snowpack

Yesterday (25th) there was a light snowfall associated with the passage of a low pressure system. Temperatures were high and rain fell at lower elevations. Yesterday's snow did not significantly change snow accumulation conditions. However, the weather is moving toward a winter pressure pattern and snowfall with wind has begun at higher elevations. Depending on the amount of snowfall in the future, the danger level will increase significantly. Be on the lookout for vulnerabilities at the interface between new and old snow, or within the new snow.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, rain or snow, occasionally cloudy until late afternoon, with a daytime high of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 3 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
