These are very dangerous avalanche conditions. Being in the below treeline and recognizing the avalanche start zone within it requires careful route setting and conservative decision making. Inexperienced groups are advised to remain within the ski area. When skiing within the ski area, please adhere to the ski areas that are open to skiing. This is extremely important for your safety as well as the safety of other guests.
Due to the diverse snow surface conditions of the old snow, the ease of triggering varies from place to place, making the conditions difficult to recognize. In addition, snowfall is forecasted due to the winter pressure pattern. Winds will also increase, so the danger level of storm slab will increase. On the main ridge, the wind has already shifted to the west.
Avalanches caused by weakly coherent snow can also occur in forests. Even small avalanches can be fatal to trees if caught in them.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (February 29).
The snowfall since last night has been similar throughout the Hakuba Valley, with about 30 cm in the upper part of the below treeline. This new snow is on a ice layer (formed by the rainfall on the 21st) where the wind is very strong, on a sintering surface where there is influence of yesterday's solar radiation, and on dry old snow where there is no influence of the wind to the north. The condition of the old snow surface is diverse and the sensitivity of the triggering varies accordingly.
Today, a low pressure system is expected to move from the southern coast of eastern Japan to the east of Japan, gradually becoming a high pressure system in the west and low pressure system in the east. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -0.2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and 11 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. At 4:19 a.m. on March 1, the Nagano Prefectural Meteorological Office is forecasting 25 cm of snowfall for northern Nagano Prefecture in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on March 2.
