Very dangerous avalanche conditions. The size of avalanches that can occur is larger than yesterday, while the triggering sensitivity is more varied from place to place. The large open terrains to the south, such as the Toomi-one and Happo-one, have the potential for large avalanches. Recognizing avalanche start zones within the forest requires careful route setting and conservative decision-making. Inexperienced groups are advised to remain within the ski area. When skiing within the ski area, please adhere to the ski areas that are open to skiing. This is extremely important for your safety as well as the safety of other visitors.
The overall snowpack trend in the northern Hakuba Valley region is an "upside-down" snowpack structure, wind-driven snow on top of less cohesive snow. The amount of new snow has also increased, so conditions are more large avalanches to occur than yesterday.
Northwest winds averaging 15 m/s or higher have been blowing on the main ridge since early today. Even in the southern areas of the Hakuba Valley, where there has been little snowfall, please be on the lookout for wind slab formation.
Yesterday (March 1), a very large number of avalanches were reported during morning safety control at the ski resort. These include size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanches in all aspects and size 1-2 storm slabs.
Snowfall from the night of February 29 through the morning of March 1 was of low cohesion, resulting in numerous loose snow avalanches. Due to higher temperatures, slab avalanches occurred in areas where sintering progressed quickly. Later last night and this morning, the snow depth in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley was 20-30 cm (upper part of below treeline) after strong winds blew strong enough to shut down the upper lifts of the ski resort.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, daytime, southerly winds, cloudy, then sunny, with a daytime high of 4 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -5.2 °C (as of 5:00). At 4:32 a.m. on March 2, the Nagano Prefectural Meteorological Office is forecasting 10 cm of snowfall for northern Nagano Prefecture in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on March 3.
