Very dangerous avalanche conditions. The size of avalanches that can occur is larger than yesterday, while the triggering sensitivity is more varied from place to place. Being in the forest and recognizing avalanche start zones within them requires careful route setting and conservative decision-making. Inexperienced groups are advised to stay within the ski area. When skiing within the ski area, please adhere to the ski areas that are open to skiing. This is extremely important for your safety as well as the safety of other visitors.
The overall feature of the snowpack is an "upside-down structure" with dense, wind-driven snow on top of less cohesive snow. Since the amount of snow cover has increased, conditions are such that a larger avalanche could occur than yesterday.
Yesterday (March 1), a size 2 glide avalanche was observed near 500 m elevation. At lower elevations, glide cracks are also expanding due to the rain. Due to stormy weather, no information has been received at the higher elevation mountain fields.
Yesterday's snowfall was accompanied by high temperatures, which allowed the new snow to proceed quickly to sintering in the below treeline. Shooting cracks were observed in the process. This was followed by a strong snowfall earlier today, with 40-50 cm of new snow mainly in the northern part of the mountain range. This new snow has been deposited under the influence of strong westerly winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting slightly strong westerly winds, snow, and a daytime high of 5 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.) and 30 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
