Dangerous avalanche conditions. Be alert for storm slabs composed of accumulated snow while affecting strong westerly winds. Due to the various conditions of the old snow surface, the triggering sensitivity will vary. In areas lower in elevation than the treeline, watch for steep slopes, especially those facing south. Persistent slabs are also present at higher elevations. There is potential for large avalanches, so even if you are at a lower elevation, think carefully about whether there is a large start zone above you or whether you are in a track. This is a suitable day for inexperienced groups to enjoy fresh snow in the ski area. When doing so, please follow the trails that are open to skiing. It is for your safety and at the same time extremely important for the safety of other guests.
New snow is deposited by westerly winds. Find areas of weak bonding within the new snow or at the interface with the old snow.
The new snowfall since yesterday has added significant load to the persistent weak layer. In general, persistent slabs are known to be activated by major weather events (e.g., heavy snowfalls).
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (3rd). Snowballs caused by wet snow were observed at very low elevations.
Snowpack conditions are very complex, with variability by location. The middle layer of snowpack facing north to east is a combination of Melt-Freeze (formed by rainfall on February 21) and faceted snow that can occur large avalanches. An avalanche caused by this weak layer was also observed and reported yesterday in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains area. The snow surface varies from hard exposed snow, wind crusts, and soft snow due to the previous strong winds. Here is a listing of the new snow up to this morning.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, snow or rain, cloudy evenings, and daytime highs of 8 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.) and 19 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
