Up to higher elevations, new snow is accumulating under less windy conditions. In the future, when moderate winds (to the extent that snow on the snow surface moves and trees sway) begin to wipe, watch out for steep slopes where wind-driven snow is deposited. Even near the treeline, this year's thin snowpack has had an impact, and there are many places where the gully has cracked and holes have appeared. These holes are hidden by the new snowfall of the past few days, so please be very careful. Even if you feel that the snowpack is stable, when hiking, please consider routes that take you out of avalanche terrain, spacing where you are exposed to danger, and resting in safe areas. If this is followed, most accidents involving multiple burials can be prevented.
Watch out for very steep slopes. Even a small avalanche can easily scoop you off your feet. A "terrain trap" below can have serious consequences.
Be wary of steep slopes where extreme shapes and isolated terrains combined with places where the surface snow has slab characteristics.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (5th).
Snowfall associated with an approaching low-pressure system began yesterday afternoon (5th). By this morning, there was about 20 cm of fresh snow near the treeline. Wind continues to be light on the main ridge, and loose snow avalanches are possible on very steep slopes. Melt-Freeze crusts (formed by the rainfall of February 21) are buried in the middle of snowpack on the northern side of the treeline and alpine areas, and yesterday's snowpack investigation still showed results that should be watched out for. The tenperature gradient has already dissipated and is expected to slowly stabilize, but at this time, caution is still required.
Today, a low pressure system is expected to move from the southern coast of eastern Japan to the east of Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow or rain, cloudy from early afternoon, and a daytime high of 5 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is -0.2 °C (as of 5:00).
