Up to higher elevations, new snow is accumulating under less windy conditions. In the future, when moderate winds (to the extent that snow on the snow surface moves and trees sway) begin to wipe, watch out for steep slopes where wind-driven snow is deposited. Due to the light snowfall this year, even now there are numerous areas where the gully has cracked and holes have formed. These holes are hidden by the new snowfall of the past few days, so please be very careful. Even if you feel that the snowpack is stable, when hiking, consider routes that take you out of avalanche terrain, spacing where you are exposed to danger, and resting in safe areas. If this is followed, most accidents involving multiple burials can be prevented.
Be alert for steep slopes that combine extreme shapes and isolated terrains with places where the surface snow has the characteristics of slabs.
Yesterday afternoon, it started raining at very low elevations. Temperatures remain high this morning. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (5th).
Snowfall associated with the passage of the low pressure system from yesterday was minimal. Earlier snowfall is also proceeding with settling. The instability of the combination of the Melt-Freeze layer (formed by rainfall on February 21) and faceted snow remains a concern in the middle layer of snow at higher elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northeasterly winds, then northerly winds, rain or snow, from midday, sometimes cloudy, with a daytime high of 5 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 7 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
