Be aware of induced storm slabs at higher elevations where the slope changes abruptly or on open, extremely steep slopes with few trees. Even if the avalanche size is small, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Be careful about falling into gully. Also, be mindful of group management, such as whether other runners are above or below you.
Extremely steep slopes noted
Yesterday (8th), there was a report of a naturally occurring small loose snow avalanche (size 1) on an extremely steep south-facing slope near 1700m.
The stormy snowfall of the past few days was settling and bonding yesterday. On the southerly slopes, crusts have formed on the surface, and a thin layer of last night's low-density snowfall, unaffected by the wind, is expected to be on top of these crusts. The middle layers of the snowpack are bonding and strengthening. In the higher elevations, crusts are also being observed locally on top of the crusts that were buried on February 22, and bonding is gradually progressing.
As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara was -0.7°C. There was about 1 cm of snowfall in the surrounding area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies and snow or rain until dawn due to a low pressure system and cold air moving northeast east of Japan.
