As the instability of stormy weather is dissipating, be aware of any remaining instability in terrain pockets. Avoid very steep slopes or slopes with isolated terrain features that are difficult for the terrain to support the snowpack, and remember to check for "terrain traps" below the slope. When filming your fellow riders, try to use safe areas off avalanche terrain. The weather is forecast to worsen. Plan your activities with this in mind.
Winds have weakened since yesterday afternoon. Watch for time-lapsed slabs remaining in terrain pockets. Also, watch for the forecasted increase in westerly winds.
Watch out for slabs that form on very steep slopes or where the terrain is not conducive to supporting a snowpack.
Avalanches on persistent slabs are triggered from areas where the snowpack is thin. Be wary of areas near exposed rocks or where the overall snowpack is thin due to wind. Avoid areas where the terrain has features that are difficult to support snowpack, such as isolated terrains or convex shapes, and choose gentle slopes.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (7th).
The stormy snow has been sintering, leaving unstable slabs in terrain localities. In Hakuba, where persistent slabs similar to those in Myoko have formed, recent snowfall has indicated that persistent slabs may have awakened. Similar dangers may occur in the Myoko area in the event of a significant amount of snowfall in the future.
Today, the area is expected to be affected by a low pressure system moving eastward over the Sea of Japan and cold air in the sky. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly and westerly winds, slightly strong, cloudy, rain or snow in the evening, and daytime high temperatures of 8 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
