These are very dangerous conditions. Even if you are in the forest, you need to consider whether where you are now is really safe. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice danger elements above you (such as avalanche start zones). Also, remember that at lower elevations, new snow hides danger elements such as holes in stream bottoms. Conservative decision-making and a large safety margin are essential, even for experienced groups. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy fresh snow in the ski resorts. If you do so, please observe the areas where you are allowed to ski. It is not only for your safety, but also for the safety of other guests.
Even if the new snow layer does not have much slab character, avalanches can still occur. Please pay maximum attention to the slope. At the moment, the wind is still not strong, averaging about 10 m/s on the main ridge. Be on the lookout for stronger winds in the future.
Even if you are in the forest, loose snow avalanches can occur. Be alert for slopes above you.
The fracture line of a spontaneous slab avalanche that occurred on March 6 on the northeast slope around 2,000 m elevation was investigated on March 8. As a result, it was determined that the avalanche was caused by persistent slab. We also found that a persistent slab avalanche was triggered by a skier on March 7. Persistent slabs are empirically known to be activated by large weather fluctuations. This heavy snowfall has increased the avalanche danger level.
No new avalanches were observed yesterday (8th).
In areas where the effects of solar radiation and warmer temperatures are stronger, new snow up to this morning is on top of the hard crust; in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, it is more than 50 cm in the below treeline. It will take time for the bonding strength of the interface between the new and old snow to increase. In addition, ice layer or Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the rain on February 21 are buried in the middle of snowpack, and faceted snow is forming on the upper surface of these crusts.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, occasional cloudiness, and daytime highs of 3 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -3.5 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and 25 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. The Nagano Prefectural Meteorological Office has issued a heavy snow warning for Omachi City, Hakuba Village, and Kotani Village at 4:15 a.m. on March 9.
