These are dangerous conditions. Even if you are in the forest, you need to consider whether where you are now is really safe. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice hazardous elements above you (such as avalanche start zones). Also, remember that at lower elevations, fresh snow hides danger elements such as holes in stream bottoms. Conservative decision-making and a large safety margin are essential, even for experienced groups. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy fresh snow on the ski slopes. If you do so, please observe the areas where you are allowed to ski. It is not only for your safety, but also for the safety of other guests.
Even if the new snow layer does not have much slab character, avalanches can occur. Pay maximum attention to the slope.
Even if you are in the forest, loose snow avalanches can still occur. Be alert for slopes above you.
Persistent slabs are empirically known to be activated by large weather fluctuations. This heavy snowfall has increased avalanche danger.
Yesterday (8th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche of size 1 wet snow avalanche was observed at lower elevations, where the effects of elevation increase were significant.
In areas where the effects of solar radiation and rising temperatures are strong, new snow up to this morning is on top of the hard crust. It will take time for the bonding strength of the interface between the new and old snow to increase. In addition, ice layer or Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the rain on February 21 are buried in the middle of snowpack in the treeline and alpine areas, and faceted snow is forming on the upper surface of these crusts.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slight westerly wind, then a slight northwesterly wind, snow or rain, and a daytime high of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.) and 22 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours and 19 cm in the past 6 hours.
