Dangerous avalanche conditions due to heavy snowfall, beware of triggering storm slabs on steep slopes. We recommend that you stay in the tree line at low slopes. Be aware of the presence of large start zones overhead even if you are on a low slope yourself. Even if the avalanche is small in size, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Be careful about falling into gully. Also, please be mindful of group management, such as making sure other skiers are not above or below you. Snowfall is still continuing. The avalanche danger level will increase depending on the amount of snowfall and winds. Please act with caution.
Beware of steep slopes
Numerous human-triggered and naturally occurring slab avalanches (size 1-1.5) were observed on steep slopes yesterday (10th).
The upper part of the snowpack, which has been settling and tightening, and the upper part of the crust on the southerly slopes have more than 40-60 cm of wind-driven snowfall from the stormy weather since the 8th, resulting in a low-density snowpack on the boundary surface and poor bonding. The middle part of the snowpack is bonding and gaining strength.
As of 4:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara is -3.5°C. 43 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. Snowfall is still continuing in the surrounding areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting that the western high and low pressure pattern will gradually loosen and high pressure will cover the area, but due to the influence of cold air and a pressure trough, it will be cloudy and snowy in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture until dawn, with some areas accompanied by thunderstorms.
