Be on the lookout for wind slabs. At higher elevations, where it has been snowing since midday yesterday, the structure is composed of dense, wind-influenced snow on top of less dense snow, resulting in an overall snowpack structure with unstable characteristics. Also, while in the forest, look for wind trails and consider whether there are any "terrain traps" below you. Towards evening, the weather is forecast to improve, but the wind is expected to remain. Be alert for wind slabs throughout the day. Also, watch for glide avalanches at very low elevations and where it is raining. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
A fierce north wind is blowing at higher elevations.
Be vigilant even on steep slopes that are not exposed to wind. Dense winter snowfall is on top of relatively weakly coherent snow.
Rapid snow accumulation on the east to southeast slopes due to northerly winds adds load to the persistent weak layer.
Yesterday (12th), a size 2 glide avalanche was observed at lower elevations.
Yesterday midday, the passage of a low pressure system resulted in rainfall at elevations below 700 m, causing a glide avalanche. On the other hand, snowfall occurred at higher elevations, followed by a winter pressure system. From yesterday to this morning, snowfall amounts to about 30 cm at higher elevations. Although the snowfall is not very heavy, the low pressure system is moving northward while developing intensely, which is causing fierce northerly winds at higher elevations.
Today, the pressure is expected to be high in the west and low in the east, but will gradually loosen in the afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow or rain, cloudy from midday, and a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 17 cm of snow having fallen in the past 6 hours and 20 cm in the past 12 hours.
