Wind slabs are expected to form on steep slopes just below the ridge and branch ridges due to snowfall with strong northerly winds up to yesterday. Be careful of triggering as bonding is difficult to proceed at higher elevations. Even if the avalanche is small in size, "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase damage are exposed. Care should also be taken to avoid falling into gully. Also, please be mindful of group management to ensure that other skiers are not above or below you. The forecast is for clear skies during the day. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large, steep, southerly slopes that are susceptible to solar radiation.
Be careful of steep slopes on the ridge and just below the branch ridge.
Yesterday (13th), there was a report of multiple human-triggered slab avalanche size 1 observations on extremely steep downwind slopes from the northeast to southeast.
Crusts have formed on the southerly slopes and in all directions below 1800 m, with strong wind-induced snowfall on top of them. 20 cm of snow has fallen near 1300 m, but settling is progressing. In wind-sensitive areas, it has been blown away, forming wind slabs downwind, and a human-triggered avalanche was reported yesterday. No reports of vulnerability observed in the middle part of the snowpack; below 1000m, the old snow is expected to be wet due to the strong influence of rainfall at the beginning of the stormy weather.
As of 5:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is -3.1℃. There was about 10 cm of snowfall in the surrounding area, but settling is in progress. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear skies and cloudy skies in the afternoon and evening, with some snow or rain in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture, due to a high pressure system but subject to the influence of a pressure trough.
