Watch for bonding of new wind slabs that formed on steep slopes just below the ridge and branch ridges due to strong winds last night. Be careful of collapsing snow shelters as well. Even if the avalanche size is small, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Care should also be taken to avoid falling into gully. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are forecast during the day. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large southerly steep slopes that are susceptible to solar radiation. Also be aware of the possibility of glide avalanches from open cracks and cliff-like areas due to the cooler temperatures since yesterday. Please do not enter the lower part of such areas or pass through them quickly.
Be careful of steep slopes on the ridge and just below the branch ridge.
Watch out for open glide cracks and steep cliff-like slopes.
Beware of large steep slopes that can increase the size of avalanches that occur.
Yesterday (15th), there were reports of numerous observations of spontaneous loose snow avalanche size 1 wet avalanches in all directions on extremely steep south-facing slopes and at lower elevations.
Wind slabs are expected to form on the downwind ridge and just below the branch ridges due to the strong winds last night. Snowfall from past stormy weather is settling and bonding is rising. The surface is expected to be crusted in areas that were strongly affected by yesterday's elevated temperatures and solar radiation. There are no reports of significant vulnerability observed within the snowpack. Snowpack is expected to be wet and losing strength due to the lack of nighttime cooling at lower elevations.
As of 4:00 pm, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is 5.5°C. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting generally clear skies and warmer temperatures due to high pressure.
