Keep in mind the bonding of wind slabs formed on extremely steep slopes just below the ridge and branch ridges. Be aware of collapsing snow shelters as well. Even if the avalanche size is small, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing trees that can increase the damage. Care should also be taken to avoid falling into gully. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are forecast during the day. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large, steep southerly slopes that are susceptible to solar radiation. Also be aware of the potential for glide avalanches from open cracks and cliff-like areas. Do not enter the lower part of such areas or pass through them quickly.
Be careful of extremely steep slopes on the ridge and just below the branch ridge.
Watch out for open glide cracks and steep cliff-like slopes.
Beware of long stretches of extremely steep slopes.
Yesterday (16th), there was a report of a naturally occurring loose snow avalanche size 1 wet avalanche observed on an extremely steep south-facing slope.
Wind slabs were formed on the downwind ridge and just below the branch ridges due to past strong winds, but bonding is expected to progress. The surface was crusted in areas that were strongly affected by yesterday's elevated temperature and solar radiation. No reports of significant vulnerability observed within the snowpack. At lower elevations, the snowpack is expected to be wetter and less intense due to cooler nighttime temperatures.
As of 4:00 pm, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara was -1.3℃. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear skies and cloudy skies in the afternoon due to a low-pressure trough and a frontal system extending from a low-pressure system moving toward northern Japan.
