Travel and Terrain Advice

Note any unstable wind slabs that remain on a specific terrain. Also consider whether there are any "terrain traps" below that slope. In some areas, very hard snow surfaces that have formed previously are exposed and should be watched for slips and falls. At lower elevations, we are in the melting season this year, with very little snow cover. Please plan your tours by setting routes with a large safety margin.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (18th), a size 2 glide avalanche was observed that is believed to have occurred within the past 24 hours. No observation information is available at higher elevations due to poor weather conditions.

Snowpack

Yesterday (18th), very strong northwest winds continued to blow overhead. Currently, the wind has weakened slightly and is now blowing northerly. As a result, at higher elevations where there was snowfall yesterday, the snow is moving heavily and wind slabs are forming on the downwind side.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the west, slightly strong, cloudy, rain or snow at night, and daytime high temperatures of 11 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 4 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
