Spring snow continues to fall between periods of fluctuating temperatures and sunshine. These variables create lower confidence in conditions with the snowpack changing throughout the day and as you change aspects or elevations. Take the time to reassess your terrain constantly as on upper elevations protected pockets of wind slab can be found whilst at treeline and below we will see the most dramatic softening of the snow surface in the heat of the day.
Limited observations suggest pockets of stiff wind slab will have formed on lee slopes from the latest north west wind event. With 10cm of new snow recorded across the region by Tuesday morning these slabs may have grown at higher elevations. Look for signs wind pressed pockets in the treeline and above and test the bond between the new and old snow interface.
Rising temperatures and periods of sunshine in the coming days will soften the snow surface. As spring continues melt freeze conditions will become more prominent leading to loose wet activity at lower elevations. Be prepared to move of solar aspects in the heat of the days if the snow surface begins to loose cohesion.
No new activity has been observed or reported in the previous few days.
Up to 10cm of new snow has been received across the region overnight. Previous to this new snow the upper snowpack was warmed by rain and higher temperatures becoming moist on all aspects at lower elevations. Northerly aspects have been stripped by strong to gale winds and protected pockets of stiff wind slab was observed in the south.
A low pressures system sitting north east of Hokkaido is wrapping around and has delivered new snow and north westerly winds overnight into Tuesday morning. We expect these snow flurries to lighten and periods of sunshine to break through later in the day. Winds should remain low to moderate in the coming days with an increase in the air temperature.
