Keep in mind the bonding of wind slabs that remain on extremely steep slopes on high elevation ridges and just below branch ridges. Even if the avalanche is small in size, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Be careful about falling into gully. Also be aware of the collapse of cornice and possibility of glide avalanches from open cracks, and cliff-like areas. Do not enter the lower part of such areas or pass through them quickly. Stormy weather is forecast for the coming days. Please act with caution and be aware of changing weather conditions.
Beware of extremely steep slopes and collapsing cornice.
Beware of areas with glide cracks and steep cliff-like slopes.
No reports of new avalanches observed yesterday (19th).
Stormy snowfall through the 19th was about 20-30 cm at higher elevations where the winds were less severe. The interface with this snowfall is crusted on the southerly slopes and in all directions below 1800m. Past strong winds have blown away the crust in areas with strong wind influence, leaving the crust bare, and wind slabs have formed on the downwind ridge and just below the branch ridges, but settling is progressing and bonding is generally expected to be good. There are no reports of significant vulnerability observed within the old snowpack, but the effects of rainfall remain at lower elevations, and the interior of the snowpack is expected to be wet and of low strength.
As of 5:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara was -2.3℃. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting snowy and cloudy conditions in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture with thunderstorms before noon and into the evening as a low-pressure system develops and passes over eastern Japan to the east.
