Watch out for storm slabs on steep slopes. Be especially careful in high elevation zones and Tanigawa-dake areas where bonding is difficult to progress. Beware of triggering in areas with abrupt changes in slopes or in open areas with few trees. It is recommended that you stay in areas of tree line where the slopes are slower. Be aware of the possibility of avalanches from large start zones overhead, even if you yourself are in an area with a low slope. Even if the avalanche is small in size, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep gullys, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Be careful about falling into gully.
Be careful not to induce sudden changes in slope or in open areas with few trees.
Yesterday (22nd), there was a report of multiple human-triggered slab avalanche size 2.5 observed on a steep east to southeast facing slope near 1300m in the Tanigawadake area.
Due to the stormy weather that began on the 20th, about 40-100 cm of snowfall affected by strong winds at higher elevations is on top of the settled old snow, and the settling is gradually progressing. In the Tanigawadake area, crusts are observed on the boundary surface, the upper part of which is faceting and weakly bonded, and multiple human-triggered slab avalanches have occurred, so care should be taken in bonding. There are no reports of significant vulnerability observed in the middle to lower part of the snowpack.
As of 4:00, the temperature at Ameda Fujiwara is -8.4°C. No snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting generally cloudy skies and snow or rain in northern Gunma Prefecture from early afternoon to late afternoon due to a low pressure system and moist air moving from the Sea of Japan to the east of Japan.
