Below Treeline Good Rising temperatures will promote wet loose activity in the coming days.

Spring has taken hold at lower elevations whilst the alpine continues to see reactive slab activity. The coming days will provide clear settled weather giving the opportunity explore far into the backcountry however the need to assess conditions remains. Avoid cross loaded wind pressed easterly aspects at higher elevations where fresh wind load may have become stiff and brittle. At lower elevations the surface will become wet with in the heat of the day with loose activity expected in steep terrain.
Pockets of winds slab remain at higher elevations in protected areas and have been reported as reactive. Continue to assess easterly aspects in the treeline and alpine where winds from earlier in the week may have deposited new load.
Sunshine and warm temperatures will lead to the snow surface becoming wet and heavy with wet loose activity expected to occur in steep terrain. Look for sighs of roller balling to indicate when to change aspect as the snow surface looses cohesion.
Multiple natural wind slab failures up to a size 2.5 were reported on Mt Iwaonupuri on the 22nd. These avalanches occurred in the tree line on south-easterly and easterly slopes.
Pockets of wind slab remain across the easterly half where recent winds have re distributed any snow available for transport. Northerly aspects are firm and wind stripped at higher elevations. Melt freeze conditions have taken hold below tree line and these conditions will rise further in elevation in the coming days with the forecasted warm temperatures.
A high pressure system sits over the country at present bringing light southerly winds with temperatures above freezing and plenty of sunshine. These conditions will remain for the coming days.
