At lower elevations, watch out for avalanches of wet snow due to the elevated temperatures during the day. Wet snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoop you off your feet. Be on the lookout for start zones above you. Also, glide avalanches are more likely to occur on slopes with glide cracks. Do not stay below the cracked slope. There may have been some snowfall at higher elevations, but this is not known at this time. If there has been enough to potentially slab avalanche, check the bonding strength of the interface between the new snow and the old snow. The sun is likely to be strong. Don't forget sunscreen and plenty of water. Have a good day.
Rating is as of morning. Note high daytime temperatures and solar radiation.
The rating is as of the morning. Yesterday there was a decent amount of rainfall and the cool nighttime temperatures remained weak. Try to stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Yesterday (23rd) was a stormy day with poor visibility, and no avalanche reports were received.
There is about 50 cm of snow from previous stormy weather (20th-21st) in the upper part of the below treeline, but it is rapidly settling due to yesterday's rainfall and rising temperatures. It is possible that snow may have fallen yesterday at higher elevations, but we do not have enough information to confirm this at this time. High temperatures are forecast again today, so we need to watch out for avalanches of wet snow on the snow surface.
High pressure is expected to prevail today, but the area will be affected by a frontal system and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly and northerly winds, cloudy and sometimes sunny, with a daytime high of 15 °C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
