This will be a spring day with hard frozen slopes in the morning losing strength during the day, increasing the potential for loose snow avalanches. Keep an eye out for snow changes on slopes that will be affected by warmer temperatures and solar radiations. Snowmelt is progressing at the treeline and below treeline. In some places there are potholes in the forested stream features. Remember that areas that were safe in high season may now be hazardous. A westerly wind averaging 15 m/s has been blowing since yesterday on the main ridge. The slopes will be hard and icy, so be careful of slips and falls. Have a good day.
Watch out for slopes with glide cracks.
Ratings are as of morning. Be careful of snow changes during the day on steep slopes that are strongly affected by solar radiation.
No new avalanche reports came in yesterday (April 1).
Yesterday (January 1), the snow surface layer did not seem to loosen much at higher elevations due to the overcast conditions and the strong westerly winds that continued to blow. However, temperatures rose to 10°C at the base of the mountain, so the snow melt progressed.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, sunny, occasionally cloudy, and a daytime high of 16 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.4 °C (as of 5:00), with no rainfall in the past 12 hours.
